Hybrid Black Walnut & Epoxy Resin Hollowform

$2,750.00

This piece was made from a gnarly black walnut crotch piece, which was actually harvested and sold to me by a viewer of my YouTube channel. At first, I had planned and hoped not to need resin to stabilize the voids, as I wanted to leave the finished piece as natural as possible. This became very evidently impossible as I got into the process, and I resorted to my preference of black epoxy to draw as little attention away from the wood as possible. During this process, I also realized that my predetermined top and bottom needed to be switched, because there was a large void that later became a fairly large “lake” of resin that would have dominated too much of the top of the piece. So, in the end, what you might call a traditional hollow form shape was turned upside down to form this piece and allow the best characteristics of the wood to shine through without too much distraction from the epoxy fills. Had a realized this sooner, I probably would have planned better to follow a more traditional form shape, but it was not to be. This piece was finished with a fairly new tung wax finish, so it should not be considered waterproof. This piece measures approximately 12 inches wide and 8 inches tall.
