Spalted & Curly Hawaiian Mango Bowl with Black Stabilization
This gorgeous piece of curly Hawaiian mango came with some pretty intense bug damage and spalting, which meant stabilization was an absolute necessity. As with most spalted woods, punky wood is almost guaranteed, and this piece was no different. I used blank stabilizing epoxy to harden the grain and also to highlight some of the softer areas. However, as seen in the interior of the bowl, the evidence of punky grain is all but impossible to remove... hence the evidence of tear out. As it turns out the spalting and curly grain each took up half of the wood, with spalting on one side and curly chatoyance on the other, which makes this piece truly unique and a one-of-a-kind treasure! Please note that this bowl was stabilized with epoxy and therefore should not be considered food safe in spite of the fact that it was finished with food safe tung wax. This bowl measures approximately 9.5 inches wide and 3 inches tall.
