The Contanimated Cactus - YouTube Video Project - (Cholla Cactus & Glow Pigments)
Watch this vase being made in this YouTube video.
This piece was made from cholla cactus and layers of glow-in-the-dark pigmented epoxy. The natural voids and pits in this cactus material absorbed the various layers of epoxy at different rates, which produced an interesting concept, which highlights different features of the material under different light sources. Under natural light, the coloring effect of the epoxy layers combined with the natural wood almost gives a kaleidoscopic effect, whereas under UV light, the changing colors of the epoxy suddenly become visible. In darkness, once the glow pigments are charged with UV light, the wood is silhouetted in a unique way with virtually every void highlighted in glowing color. This vase was finished with TotalBoat high performance epoxy, making it waterproof for use with live flowers. This vase also measures approximately 6 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide.
